One of a Kind Commissions

ROXLEYS  ~ Simplethings  ~ KEANE

I was contacted in 2003 by a fan of the pop group Keane, who wanted a keepsake of the band and their music in the form of a character from one of their music videos.
Whilst I prefer to be associated with soft sculpture cloth figures I agreed to make this creature and set about designing a pattern.

In the music video, 'Somewhere Only We Know' Keane appear coming out of a studio and take a taxi. Then they come across a forest where the "simple thing" aliens live (called "Roxleys" by the fan, Ann Wain, who commissioned the character. It's a name now taken by many fans). Each Roxley represents the spirit of a tree.
This international video was directed by Corin Hardy, produced by Kit Hawkins for White House Pictures and shot between 22 - 23 November  2003. Hardy was influenced by the Princess Mononoke movie and created the "simple thing" aliens, based on the "kodamas" appearing on that film.

This is the original Roxley, above, commissioned by Ann Wain and taken to a Keane concert.
A band member asked if he could have it and she gave it to him.

She now has her own Roxley:
